THE HISTORY OF NICAWAVES

Mike came to Popoyo over ten years ago in search of world-class, Nicaraguan surf, fell in love with this spot and never left. He found a beautiful 2 acre Popoyo property in 2005 and with the help of a few local friends, the first small house was built later that year.

Over time the property was expanded to 7 acres and hundreds of fruit and ornamental trees were planted amongst the grounds. More casitas were built, and in 2009 Nicawaves Hotel opened. Ever since then, we’ve been really pleased to welcome thousands of guests to this piece of paradise. All enjoying the mellow vibe, comfortable setting and within walking distance of epic Nicaraguan waves. In 2015, we realized the dream of installing a swimming pool. Also in 2015, we proudly hosted the Costa Rican surf team, who stayed with us when they won the world championships. Today Mike still lives on the grounds with his wife, son, and daughter.

OUR LOVE FOR THE SURF

Mike grew up in South Carolina and learned to surf on the East Coast and Hawaii. Surfing has always been a big part of his life and after becoming a two-time finalist in the US surf championships, visited Central America in search of incredible surf. After visiting Popoyo in 2005 he knew he had found a very special place, which he wants to share with others.

THE TEAM

Gerald is our local Nicaraguan surf guide. Born and raised here, he has a wealth of experience of the local Popoyo surf spots. Whether you’re on one of the daily tours as part of our Surf Package or taking a lesson, Gerald is all about keeping you stoked and getting you into the perfect type of waves you are looking for! He also takes high quality action surf photos. Gerald speaks Spanish and English.

Our friendly team are all here to help with anything you need and ensure you have the best possible vacation and are all Popoyo locals. Maria manages the Nicawaves reception and is on hand to get you settled in and answer any questions. Gabriela and our bartending team are ready to take your order and can make some excellent cocktails. All of our team speak Spanish and English.

Denis is our head chef and is passionate about cooking delicious food in our onsite restaurant. Don’t miss his nightly specials, cooked with fresh, local ingredients. The pizza nights are awesome too! Mayella and Maria are our other cooks and together they whip up the tasty dishes from our menu. We are all really proud our restaurant is rated the number one Restaurant in Popoyo on TripAdvisor!

You will see Luis, our maintenance man around the grounds, watering and trimming the plants to keep the tropical gardens looking great. Rosaura, our maid, is on hand to clean your room or wash any laundry. Bayron is our night watchman and always has a smile on his face.
